About Anti-Corrosive Water Borne Primers

Posted in Product News and Information by Firwood Paints on January 25th 2016
Anti-corrosive water borne primers are designed to help the long term protection of metal substrates and provide a sound base for subsequent coats of paint. Applying a primer may sometimes seem like an unnecessary expense, but a good primer provides a uniform base, improves adhesion, and, in some cases, can even reduce the number of intermediate and topcoats required to achieve a smooth finish. Keep reading for more information about waterborne primers and get the ultimate results with Firwood's specialist range.

Everything You Need To Know About Water Borne Primers

In general, a substrate that is correctly primed is less likely to peel or crack. However, good and appropriate preparation is paramount to achieving a long lasting result. You can achieve this through grit blasting, sanding or scraping, or making sure the surface to be primed is clean, dry and free from dust, grease and contaminants.

Water based anti-corrosive primers have a low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) content, are quick drying, and can be used in environments where solvent borne paints are unsuitable.

The Firwood 2586 Water Borne Anti-Corrosive Primer is a fast drying, easy to apply, low odour primer, formulated to give tough, anti-corrosive protection in corrosive atmospheres for industrial applications. Providing good flexibility and scratch resistance, it gives excellent adhesion to different metals, including ferrous metals. Typical applications include steel fabrications, automotive parts, architectural ironmongery, valves and pipe fittings, where a waterborne paint system is required.

Our water borne primers have been extensively tested and have passed a 500 hour hot salt spray test to ASTM B117 standard on suitably prepared substrates, ensuring five-star results! The hydrophobic coating withstands long term weathering, and application can be by conventional, HVLP, airless spray or brush. Brushes and spray equipment should be cleaned with tap water immediately after use to keep them in prime condition.

For a full water borne painting system, why not finish with the Firwood 2580 Water Borne Gloss Finish? This product is a quick drying, low odour, water borne acrylic gloss for use on primed metal and wood substrates. Available in both BS 4800 and RAL colour standards, it provides a decorative and protective finish and is ideal for both internal and external use.
