What Is The Best Method For Painting A Garage Floor?

Posted in Firwood Hints and Tips by Firwood Paints Limited on September 20th 2019
Applying garage floor paint has numerous benefits from the improvement of the floors appearance to the more practical such as wear and tear resistance and increased safety. All of this, however, will be in vain unless the correct methods and the correct materials are used. You will need to use the correct materials, equipment and methods to ensure the painted floor has a long lifespan.

Preparing the garage floor

The first consideration when painting your garage floor will be how to best prepare the surface for application of the paint. Regardless of the paint used failure to suitably prepare the floor in advance will reduce the longevity of the paint job or the paint may not adhere to the substrate as intended.

First of all clear the floor and observe any areas that are damaged and require repairing. This may require the concrete chiseling and filling with a mortar repair product. It may be that the floor is free of damage and you can move on to preparing the floor for application.

Concrete is a very porous substrate and catches the dirt and dust floating around the garage. There are several ways to prepare the floor and the best solution varies depending on the status of the substrate. If the floor has laitance then this will need removing. The methods for removing laitance again vary including acid etching, scabbing, and several other methods. For more information on how to remove laitance from your garage floor and why it is important you can read our article 'Why Is It Important To Remove Laitance?'.

Choosing the right paint

The type of paint you select needs to be appropriate for the type and amount of traffic passing across the floor. Where the floor has low traffic a more budget solution may be appropriate, whereas a floor that has vehicles and/or forklift truck traffic will require a different, more hard-wearing solution.

Generally speaking there are two types of solutions on offer for garage floor paint:

Single Pack Paint: The single pack solutions are a more budget solution, which is suitable for light foot traffic. They are also easy and quick to apply. Whilst this is a cost saving product you can expect that there will be touch-ups required on a more regular basis than the harder wearing paints.

Two Pack Epoxy Paint: Epoxy paints are the best choice for garage floors with heavier traffic and forklift/vehicle traffic. These paints are durable and stain- and slip-resistant. These products are low maintenance and longer lasting than the single pack options but do require more care and attention during the application process.

Reading the instructions

Not all paints are the same. The products have a variety of differences, whether it is in drying time or application methods. Whilst a product may feel dry to the touch the curing process may take longer, and the instructions for the product purchased will help determine that timeframe.
