Posted in Firwood Hints and Tips by Firwood Paints Ltd on February 24th 2016
Firwood 690 Swimming Pool Paint is a specialist chlorinated rubber paint available in over 300 colours and has been developed to provide good chemical and water resistance and is suitable for long-term immersion in water with either mild acidic or alkaline properties.

Prior to application of the swimming pool paint correct surface preparation should be carried to ensure the success of your project.

Surface Preparation – Bare Concrete

Surfaces to be coated should be at least 4 weeks old and have a moisture content of less than 7%.

The surface should be free from any contaminants or surface laitance.

Traces of grease or oil can be removed using Firwood 110 Cleaning & Degreasing Fluid.

Very smooth concrete or concrete with surface laitance should be treated with Firwood Concrete Etching Fluid (refer to application instructions for correct use of this product).

Treated areas be thoroughly washed down and allowed to dry prior to application.

Surface Preparation – Painted Surfaces

The surface should be thoroughly abraded by sanding to improve adhesion between the coats of paint.

Test the coating on a small area to check compatibility with previous coating.

Clean the test area then apply a single coat of paint. After drying check that no lifting has occurred and that a good intercoat adhesion exists between the old and new paint.

Remove any loose or weak material.

All cracks, voids or holes should be filled with a cement base filler. They should be treated as new concrete and spot primed.

Wash with detergent solution to remove any remaining contaminants.

Finally, wash with fresh water and leave to dry completely before painting.

Mix thoroughly for approximately for 5 minutes use a wide blade stirrer.Alternatively a wooden batten at least 25mm wide is ideal

Apply the paint using brush or short pile roller.Best results are obtained in warm (minimum 15ºC), dry conditions.

Avoid application in very hot direct sunlight as this may lead to blistering.

It is recommended that on bare concrete the first coat be diluted with approx 10-20% Firwood 143 Thinners by volume.Once dried the second coat can be applied at full strength.

Application equipment should be cleaned using Firwood 143 Thinners.

Always leave the pool paint for a minimum of 3 days after application of the final coat filling the pool with water.

In low temperatures, sub 10ºC, this should be extended to 7 days.
