Posted in Firwood Hints and Tips by Firwood Paints Ltd on February 24th 2016
This inexpensive, easy to apply and quick drying floor paint dries to a tough high gloss finish, is the perfect way to transform drab or stained concrete into a hard wearing surface that provides a resistance to dirt, dust and oil making the floor easy to clean. Ideal for use on concrete and timber floors. For a satin finish, see our Firwood 27 Satinfloor Paint.

To use this product follow the instructions below.

Firwood 29 Floor Paint

Surface Preparation

Bare Concrete

Surfaces to be coated should be at least 4 weeks old and have a moisture content of less than 7%. Newly laid concrete slowly emits moisture and painting a floor too early will result in the paint flaking off. Ideally check the floor surface with a moisture meter.

Ensure that the surface is free from contaminants or surface laitance.Use Firwood 110 Cleaning & Degreasing Fluid to remove traces of grease and oil.

Very smooth concrete or concrete with surface laitance should be treated using Firwood 2709 Concrete Etching Fluid see How To Apply Concrete Etching Fluid.

Treated areas should be thoroughly washed down and allowed to thoroughly dry before coating.

Previously Painted Surfaces

Surfaces should be thoroughly abraded by sanding to improve adhesion and remove any weak or loose material.

The area should be free from dust, oil and grease.

It is advisable to test the coating on a small area to check compatibility with previous coatings.

Wooden Floors

Sand down the surface where necessary to remove any existing coatings and loose material.

Remove all dust and ensure surfaces are clean and dry before application of the coating.

Seal any knots with a clear knotting solution.

Mixing & Application

Mix the paint thoroughly for approx. 5 minutes using a wide bladed stirrer. A wooden batten at least 25mm wide is ideal.

Best results are obtained in warm (minimum 15°C), dry conditions with a good through draught. Apply using a brush and/or long pile, double arm roller.

On bare concrete floors it is recommended that the first coat be diluted with approx. 10-20% Firwood 114 Thinners by volume prior to application. This will act as a binding primer and will help seal the concrete surface. Once dried, a second coat can be applied at full strength.

On previously painted floors it is recommended that two thin coats be applied rather than one thick coat. This will prolong the life and performance of the coating.

For application onto wooden floors, a minimum of two coats is recommended. Chipboard flooring may require three coats due to absorption of the coating into the substrate.

Application equipment should be cleaned immediately after use using Firwood 114 Thinners.
